Magical Isla Holbox: 5 unforgettable activities
Posted on December 11, 2022
Isla Holbox is a paradise island off the north coast of Yucatan, Mexico! It is rightly compared to the Maldives. Holbox has endless white sandy beaches, beautiful nature and a relaxed atmosphere. In this blog we list 5 unforgettable activities on magical Isla Holbox.
Stay & Tips
Traveling through the Yucatan? We definitely recommend three days of relaxation on Isla Holbox. The island can be reached by driving your rental car to Chiquilá or by taking the ADO bus to the village. Are you coming with the rental car? You leave this behind in Chiquilá because Isla Holbox is car-free. Compare the different parking lots carefully, on average a day of parking costs about five euros. A boat leaves from Chiquilá every half hour to Isla Holbox. You do not need to book this in advance, as there is plenty on offer.
We stayed four nights at Holbox Deluxe Apartments. From the harbor you can easily take a golf cart to the accommodation. A nice experience. The apartment complex has a swimming pool, bicycles and a (breakfast) bar. An ideal base!
Already feel like going to Holbox? In any case, we would like to give you two tips:
-
Don't forget your bottles of DEET! Isla Holbox is beautiful and the mosquitoes think so too.
-
Don't forget to withdraw enough money. The ATMs on the island are scarce and not well stocked.
1. Discover Isla Holbox by bike
You can rent bicycles on every street corner in Holbox! This is definitely recommended. It is cheaper than taking the golf cart taxis and you can also admire the island at your leisure while cycling and stop wherever you want. Bicycles can be rented from ten euros per day.
2. Walk 'on' the water: Punta Mosquito
If you have rented a bicycle, go out and cycle from the center along the coast to hotel Las Nubes. Park your bike here and continue your way via the beautiful water to Punta Mosquito. Do this when the tide is low, the water does not go further than your knees and if you are lucky you will encounter flamingos and maybe even dolphins.
3. An introduction to a big friendly giant
If you visit Isla Holbox between May and September you have a 95% chance of seeing whale sharks and even swimming with them. This is very special because it is one of the few places in the world where you can admire these big gentle giants. Whale sharks eat plankton and are therefore not dangerous. Prepare well for the boat trip and take a 'Primatour' pill in advance if you feel nauseous easily. Considering that the whale sharks are twelve meters long and that they are also curious, it can be overwhelming to actually swim with them. Stay calm and respect the animals and it will be a fantastic experience where, if you are lucky, you may even encounter other beautiful fish and rays.
4. Spotting street art on Holbox
The most beautiful murals can be found all over Isla Holbox! This creates a colorful whole and a nice atmosphere! Spot them on the walls of restaurants and beach clubs where you can enjoy good food.
5. A magical sunset at Punta Cocos
In the far west of Isla Holbox you will find Punta Cocos, a beautiful beach where you can relax during the day and enjoy the beautiful sunset in the evening. Don't forget to bring your bottle of DEET, the mosquitoes also love the sunset.
