Three Days Luxembourg

Looking for a short getaway full of variety? Luxembourg may be small, but it has it all: beautiful forests, impressive castles, charming towns, and well-organized public transport. We went on a three-day road trip and stayed two nights in the quiet village of Beringen. From there, we explored the country by car and train.

Good to know: Parking is free or inexpensive in many places, and public transport throughout Luxembourg is completely free.

Day 1: From Rotterdam to Luxembourg

We left the Netherlands by car and headed to Luxembourg. On the way, we first stopped at the impressive viewpoint Runtschelt in Kaundorf—a short walk leads to a panoramic spot overlooking the Sûre Valley.

Parking at Runtschelt: Small free parking lot near the trailhead (search Google Maps for "Runtschelt Parking Kaundorf").

Next, we drove to the Müllerthal region, also known as Little Switzerland. This area is a paradise for hikers, with forests, rock formations, and waterfalls. We parked at the Schiessentümpel parking lot and walked from there to the iconic waterfall, exploring parts of different hiking trails. We had lunch at Brasserie Heringer Millen.

In the afternoon, we headed to Hotel Martha in Beringen, a great base near the town of Mersch with spacious rooms, free parking, and its own restaurant. In the evening, we dined at the hotel restaurant—tasty food and allergens clearly indicated on the menu.

Day 2: Vianden & Luxembourg City

After a good breakfast at Hotel Martha, we drove northeast to the charming town of Vianden. We visited the impressive Vianden Castle, beautifully restored and well worth a visit (€13 per person). We walked down from the castle and then took the chairlift (€6.50 one-way), which brought us back up to a scenic viewpoint with a restaurant—a fun way to see the area from above. We parked near the center at Parking P1 – Rue du Vieux Marché, within walking distance of the castle.

After our visit to Vianden, we drove back to Mersch, where we parked the car and took the train to Luxembourg City—super convenient since public transport is free in Luxembourg. In the city, we explored highlights like the Notre-Dame Cathedral, the striking Adolphe Bridge, the mysterious Bock Casemates, the viewpoint at the Pfaffenthal Lift, the scenic Chemin de la Corniche, and the green area of Grund. For lunch, we stopped at D’Gëlle Klack, a cozy brasserie with a sunny terrace and relaxed vibes. Allergen info was clearly listed on the menu here too—a big plus!

After a full day of impressions, we took the train back to Mersch and ended the evening with dinner at Bella Ciao. This cozy Italian spot serves delicious pizzas and pastas, and again, everything regarding allergens was well taken care of.

Day 3: Bourscheid Castle & heading home

Before heading back to the Netherlands, we made one final stop at Bourscheid Castle. This castle is perched on a hill and offers stunning views of the surrounding valley. Parking: There’s a parking lot near the entrance. Entry to the castle is €8 per person.

After this cultural highlight, we got back in the car and drove home—in under four hours, you’re back in the Netherlands.
