One Day Luxembourg-City

Looking for a city trip destination that is compact, green and surprisingly versatile? Then Luxembourg City is the perfect choice. Despite its modest size, the city offers a nice mix of historical sites, impressive views, cosy squares and modern shops. And thanks to free public transport, travelling around the city is quick and easy. We share our hotspots in this blog.

Arrival: Gare Centrale

From the town of Mersch, we took the train to Gare Centrale, Luxembourg City's main train station. From here you can walk to the city centre in about 10 minutes. A big advantage: throughout Luxembourg you can use free public transport. Trams, buses and trains thus cost you nothing at all, which makes exploring the city extra easy.

Adolphe Bridge

From the station, it makes sense to walk towards the Adolphe Bridge. This elegant 20th-century arch bridge is not only an architectural masterpiece, but also offers stunning views over the Pétrusse Valley. A great place to start your visit to the city.

Notre-Dame Cathedral

Within walking distance of the bridge is Notre-Dame Cathedral, an imposing Gothic church that impresses both outside and inside. The colourful stained-glass windows and richly decorated interior make a short stop worthwhile. Also fun: near the cathedral you will find the Gëlle Fra (Golden Woman), a well-known national monument.

Atmospheric squares: Place Guillaume II and Place d'Armes

After your visit to the cathedral, walk on to Place Guillaume II, a lively square surrounded by historic buildings and cosy terraces. A little further on is Place d'Armes, the beating heart of the city, where you will be surrounded by cafés, shops and often live music. This is a nice place to take a coffee break and absorb the city's atmosphere.

Chemin de la Corniche

After the squares, it's time for one of the city's highlights: the Chemin de la Corniche. This footpath winds along the old ramparts and offers spectacular panoramas over the lower Grund district and the surrounding valleys. Not for nothing is this route also called ‘Europe's most beautiful balcony’.

Bock Casemates

Along the Corniche you will find the entrance to the Bock Casemates. These ancient underground defences are a fascinating labyrinth of corridors and shelters. During a visit, you will walk through tunnels that were once used strategically to protect the city. Highly recommended for those who want to learn more about Luxembourg's history.

Pfaffenthal Lift

Near the casemates is the Pfaffenthal Lift, a modern glass lift that takes you to the lower Grund district for free.  On the platform and during the ride, you have great views over the city. An original and quick way to explore another part of Luxembourg City!

Relaxing at Grund and the Parc Municipal

Once you arrive downstairs, you can take a stroll around Grund, one of the city's most atmospheric neighbourhoods. Narrow streets, historic buildings and a peaceful atmosphere make this a great place to take a break. Still have some energy left? Then stroll on to the Parc Municipal, a vast park where you can enjoy greenery and peace in the middle of the city.

Lunchtip: D'Gëlle Klack

For a tasty lunch, I recommend D'Gëlle Klack. This cosy brasserie has a sunny terrace and an extensive menu on which allergens are neatly indicated. Here you can choose from local specialities as well as light dishes such as salads and sandwiches.

Shopping at the Grand Rue

After lunch, it's time for shopping! The Grand Rue, Luxembourg City's main shopping street, offers a good mix of international brands, local boutiques and luxury shops. The street is largely car-free, which makes shopping extra relaxing.

Dining at Luxembourg City

After a day full of impressions, it is time to enjoy a good meal. Luxembourg City offers a surprising number of nice restaurants and bars. A few tips:

  • Bella Ciao: atmospheric Italian restaurant with delicious pizzas and pastas.

  • Munchies: hip spot for comfort food with a creative twist.

  • Urban: modern bar with an extensive menu and tasty cocktails.

  • Bazaar: trendy restaurant with international dishes in a cosy setting.
