Bologna may not be as famous as Venice or Florence, but this charming city in northern Italy has at least as much to offer. With beautiful architecture, delicious food and an authentic atmosphere, Bologna is a perfect destination for those who really want to experience Italy but prefer to avoid the crowds. Here are our tips for an unforgettable visit to Bologna!

Tip 1: Finestrella

Want to discover a slice of Venice, but without the hordes of tourists? Then visit the Finestrella, or Bologna's ‘magic window’. Through this small window, you look out onto a canal almost hidden among the buildings. A piece of hidden charm in the middle of the city and a great spot for a unique photo!

Tip 2: The leaning towers of Bologna: Le Due Torri

Everyone knows the Tower of Pisa, but did you know that Bologna's towers are even more crooked? The Due Torri, the Asinelli and Garisenda Towers, are iconic symbols of the city. You can climb the Asinelli Tower and enjoy spectacular views over Bologna. Mind you, the climb is steep and high, but the view makes up for everything!

Tip 3: Mercato di Mezzo

Bologna is known for its culinary scene, and you can taste it best at Mercato di Mezzo. This market hall, full of stalls selling fresh pasta, cheeses and meats, is the place to taste a classic pasta bolognese. Take your time to stroll past the different stalls and enjoy the local specialities - a walhalla for foodies!

Tip 4: The heart of Bologna

The soul of Bologna can be found in the squares Piazza Maggiore and Piazza Nettuno. Here you can admire the impressive San Petronio Basilica and experience the city's lively atmosphere. Popular with locals and tourists alike, the squares are the perfect place to sit and take in the scenery.

Tip 5: La Prosciutteria

For a cosy evening with a delicious aperitif and tasty food, La Prosciutteria is the place to be. Here you will enjoy a plate full of Italian meats, cheeses and fresh bread, along with a refreshing Aperol Spritz.

Tip 6: Portici of Bologna
One of Bologna's unique features are the portici, covered galleries that wind throughout the city. Did you know that there are more than 40 kilometres of portici? Ideal for strolling through, whatever the weather. In fact, these arcades are so special that they are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Tip 7: Gluten-free enjoyment at Stringhetto Lovers

Do you have a gluten allergy or eat gluten-free? In Bologna, that doesn't have to be a problem! Stringhetto Lovers has a wide selection of gluten-free snacks and delicacies. So you can enjoy all the goodies Bologna has to offer without worrying about allergies.

Bologna has everything for a perfect trip: history, charm, great restaurants and an atmosphere that feels authentically Italian. Whether you stroll through the portici, visit the markets or enjoy the impressive squares, this city will surprise and seduce you.
