Yes, you're going to Panama! In this blog, we share practical tips for your visit to Panama.
1. Dollars
In Panama, you generally pay with the US dollar. They come out as bills from the ATMs. You'll get the Panamanian balboa as coin change (less than one dollar)! So don't be surprised. Also, Panamanians are not shy about asking for an extra commission when you pay with a card at a restaurant, for example.
2. Take an Uber or Taxi
Unlike what we're used to in the Netherlands, Uber or taxi is not that expensive! We gratefully made use of this. It also ensures that you can move around safely in Panama City in the evening. The local buses in places like Bocas del Toro are also recommended. For more information, see our blog.
3. Hablas Español?
In Bocas del Toro, you might get by with a few words of English, but generally, it is very useful to brush up on your Spanish before going to Panama. Knowing the basics can help you make yourself understood in certain situations. Not up for it? Then use the voice function of, for example, Google Translate.
4. A refreshing shower
Panama has two seasons: the rainy season and the dry season. You have a chance of predominantly sunny weather from December to April. Note that this mainly applies to the mainland. For instance, we were in Bocas del Toro in December and it rained almost non-stop for three days. Generally, it is advisable to pack your raincoat, rain pants, and closed shoes before departure. There's a good chance you'll be surprised by a shower even in the dry season. That's why beautiful Panama is so green!
5. A local SIM card
Lost or need to look up the name of that nice restaurant again? Unlimited internet access is secretly quite handy. If you're tired of questions from home, you can always switch to airplane mode. Opt for an e-Sim or a SIM card from TIGO.
6. Travel adapter
You won't get far in Panama without a travel adapter. So don't forget to pack it. You'll need an adapter with type A or B.
7. Insect spray & DEET
Yup, you can't avoid it. Throughout Panama, you'll find mosquitoes and other insects that can cause itchy bumps. Therefore, take a spray with a high percentage of DEET and aftercare such as Azaron. Also, if you're not sure whether you have the right vaccinations, check via this website.
Tip: Be extra alert on the beaches for sand flies and fleas. They are not much deterred by insect spray. Instead, use coconut oil.
