Denmark has much more to offer than just Copenhagen. During our road trip, we discovered small villages, impressive nature, modern cities and cozy beaches. From Rotterdam we drove in about eight hours to Esbjerg, our first destination, and then explored the country further. In this blog we share our route.
Esbjerg and surroundings
We began our trip in Esbjerg, a town with a harbor in southern Denmark. Here we stayed for three nights at A Place To Hotel, a nice place overlooking the sea.
From Esbjerg we visited:
-
Fanø: This island is an oasis of tranquility. The ferry crossing from Esbjerg takes only 12 minutes. On Fanø, we walked through the cute village of Nordby and spotted seals on the sandbanks.
-
Ribe: Scandinavia's oldest town exudes history. Ribe Cathedral is worth a visit, as are the cobblestone streets full of colorful houses. If you want to learn more about Viking times, the Ribe Vikingecenter is highly recommended.
-
Marsk Tower: This unusual spiral tower offers panoramic views of the flat landscapes of southern Denmark. Up a few stairs and you can enjoy the scenery.
Aalborg and surroundings
After Esbjerg, we drove to Aarhus, a city full of museums, trendy restaurants and cozy streets. Highly recommended is the ARoS Aarhus Art Museum, especially the rainbow circle on the roof. From Aarhus, we continued our journey north to Aalborg, a city known for its street art and cozy atmosphere. We stayed three nights in this fine AirBnb.
From Aalborg we visited:
-
Rabjerg Mile: These moving sand dunes are unique in Europe. It feels like walking through a desert, when in fact you are not far from the coast.
-
Skagen: This fishing village is known for its fresh seafood. At restaurant Pakhuset, we ate delicious shrimp and kibbeling.
-
Grenen: This is where the North Sea and Kattegat meet. It is a special experience to stand with your feet in both seas.
-
Rubjerg Knude Fyr: A lighthouse on the edge of steep cliffs. The lighthouse is partially buried in sand, which makes for a surreal view.
-
Løkken: A beach where you are allowed to drive a car. Along the beach you will also find small beach houses and cozy cafes.
Kopenhagen
Copenhagen was our last stop. We stayed three nights at Scandic CPH Strandparken, the perfect base since we were traveling with our dog.
Some of our highlights in Copenhagen:
-
Nyhavn: The colorful harbor is a perfect place for a stroll and a coffee by the water.
-
Tivoli: This amusement park is a mix of nostalgia and entertainment, fun for young and old alike.
-
Superkilen Park: A colorful park full of art and playground equipment to see a different side of Copenhagen.
-
Christianshavn: This neighborhood with canals and small bridges reminded us of Amsterdam, but with a Danish twist.
