After Esbjerg and a short stop in vibrant Aarhus, we continued our journey north. Next stop: Aalborg. A surprisingly fun city filled with street art, cosy cafés, and a laid-back vibe. It also turned out to be the perfect base for some impressive day trips along the Danish coast. We stayed just outside the city in a charming little cottage with plenty of space for Ollie.
Aalborg
Aalborg feels lively, creative, and just a little bit rough around the edges – perfect for a relaxed city walk along its colourful murals. Just like in Aarhus and Odense, we visited the local food hall – ideal when you're dealing with food allergies and travelling with a dog. There was plenty of choice, a great atmosphere, and best of all: Ollie was welcome to join us inside.
Råbjerg Mile
One of the most remarkable natural phenomena in Northern Europe: a massive migrating sand dune that shifts about 15 metres each year. As soon as you step into the dunes, it feels like you've entered a desert. Ollie happily ran through the sand while we took in the stunning views. Combine this with a visit to Skagen or Grenen for a perfect day trip.
Skagen & Grenen
Skagen is a charming fishing village with a relaxed atmosphere and great seafood restaurants. A bit further lies Grenen, the northernmost point of Denmark. Here, you can literally see the North Sea and the Baltic Sea collide. It’s an impressive sight—just be prepared for lots of tourists!
Rubjerg Knude Fyr & Løkken
The Rubjerg Knude lighthouse is literally on the edge of a cliff. Due to sand drift and coastal erosion, it has gradually moved closer to the edge. The walk to get there is tough but doable. After that, we drove on to the town of Løkken, where you can actually drive your car right onto the beach. Truly special!
Odense
Our last stop before ending our road trip through Denmark in Copenhagen was Odense. It’s a city of fairy tales, history, and surprisingly many modern spots. Once again, we found ourselves at the local food hall — a welcoming place with great options for people with allergies, and dogs are welcome too.
This route through Northern Jutland was an unexpected highlight: rugged nature, quiet beaches, friendly people, and a surprising number of dog-friendly and allergy-friendly spots.
