Bonaire is known as one of the best destinations in the world for shore snorkeling and diving. The island is surrounded by crystal-clear turquoise water, coral reefs that start right off the coast, and a relaxed island atmosphere. In this blog, we share our favorite snorkeling spots and beaches on Bonaire, combined with quiet beach locations and beach clubs where snorkeling and relaxation go hand in hand.
Snorkeling on Bonaire: straight from the shore
One of the biggest advantages of snorkeling on Bonaire is that most spots are easily accessible from the shore. No boat needed: park your car, walk into the water, and you’ll find yourself right above the reef.
1000 Steps
1000 Steps is one of the most well-known snorkeling spots on Bonaire. You reach the beach via a staircase and then enter the water toward the coral reef. The water is clear and there is a good chance of spotting sea turtles. Due to the depth and currents, this spot is best suited for experienced snorkelers.
Candyland
Candyland is a relatively quiet snorkeling spot with plenty of fish and healthy coral. It is less crowded than some of the more famous locations, making it ideal for those who want to snorkel in peace.
Oil Slick Leap
Oil Slick Leap is especially popular with divers, but it is also very suitable for snorkeling. You enter the water via a staircase or a jump and swim directly above a beautiful reef. The water is deep and clear, offering excellent visibility and a lot of marine life.
Beaches on Bonaire with good snorkeling opportunities
In addition to snorkeling spots, Bonaire has several beaches where relaxing and snorkeling can be easily combined.
Te Amo Beach
Te Amo Beach is located close to the airport and is surprisingly quiet. The beach is perfect for a short snorkeling session and is known for frequent sea turtle sightings. There are shaded areas, making it a pleasant spot on warm days.
Bachelor Beach
Bachelor Beach is a small beach with calm water and beautiful sea views. Sometimes there is hardly any beach at all, and you enter the water directly via a staircase. It is an accessible place for snorkeling and also very suitable for relaxing by the water.
Nature and unspoiled beaches on Bonaire
For those who want to experience the more rugged and natural side of Bonaire, there are a few places that should not be missed.
Washington Slagbaai National Park
Located in the north of the island, Washington Slagbaai National Park is home to unspoiled beaches and snorkeling spots, accessible with a 4x4.
-
Playa Funchi – raw, quiet, and untouched
-
Wayaka II – one of the most beautiful beaches in the park with clear water
Be sure to check the park’s opening hours and bring plenty of water.
Salt Pans
Bonaire’s salt pans are especially magical in the early morning. Sea turtles are regularly spotted here, and flamingos are often seen in this area as well.
Beach clubs with snorkeling access
Ocean Oasis
Ocean Oasis is known for its calm atmosphere and good snorkeling opportunities right in front of the beach. A great place to alternate between snorkeling and relaxing.
Chogogo
Chogogo combines an accessible beach setting with snorkeling spots in the immediate area, making it ideal for a relaxed beach day.
Grand Windsock
At Grand Windsock, beach club and snorkeling spot go hand in hand. The reef is close to shore, making it suitable for both snorkelers and divers.
Lac Cai & Jibe City
Lac Cai offers a completely different experience with shallow water, mangroves, and a laid-back atmosphere. Combined with Hang Out Beach Bar and Jibe City, it’s a perfect place for a relaxed beach day with lunch right by the water.
