Yes, you're going to Drake Bay! We found this to be a little paradise on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. It’s a bit remote, but that’s exactly what makes it so special. Tranquility, jungle, wildlife, and a laid-back beach vibe. In this mini guide, we’re sharing our tips for Drake Bay – from transportation to tours, and of course: where to eat allergy-friendly!
Transport to Drake Bay
Heads up: Drake Bay is quite remote and not super easy to reach. But trust us – it’s worth the effort!
Option 1: By 4x4
Got a good rental car (4x4)? Then you can drive all the way to Drake Bay. The last 30 km are really bumpy – expect this stretch to take about 1.5 hours.
-
Manuel Antonio – Drake Bay: ± 4 hours
-
Uvita – Drake Bay: ± 3 hours
-
San José – Drake Bay: ± 7 hours
Option 2: Car + boat from Sierpe
Not up for those last bumpy kilometers? Park your car in Sierpe and take the boat to Drake Bay. The ride takes about an hour and is already an adventure in itself (think: mangroves and crocodiles!).
Option 3: Public transport + boat
From Manuel Antonio, Uvita or San José, take a bus to Palmar Norte. From there, grab a taxi (±15 min) to Sierpe and hop on the boat. Make sure to check boat schedules in advance – they usually only run once or twice a day.
Accommodation in Drake Bay
We stayed at Jacamar Hotel – highly recommended! Spacious room, comfy bed, good breakfast, and just a short walk to the beach. We stayed for 3 nights, but if you're only visiting Corcovado, 2 nights should be enough.
Tip 1. Bring enough cash
There are no ATMs in Drake Bay. Also, many restaurants and tours charge a 13% fee if you pay by credit card.
Tip 2. Visit Corcovado National Park
The reason to go to Drake Bay. It’s one of the most biodiverse places on the planet. Think: tapirs, jaguars, howler monkeys, and even sea turtles. You can only enter the park with a guide.
We booked a day tour through Pacheco Tours and had an amazing guide, Elbert! Make sure to book an early tour (around 6:00 AM) – that’s when your chances of spotting wildlife are best.
Tip 3. Kayaking & fishing
You can easily rent a kayak or canoe at the beach to explore the bay. Prefer heading out to sea? Go on a sport fishing trip – perfect for those who love fishing in the wild.
Tip 4. Whale & dolphin watching
Drake Bay is one of the best spots to see whales and dolphins. The best time to see humpback whales is from mid-July to October. Dolphins can usually be spotted year-round. We were there in the "wrong" season – hopefully, you’ll have better luck!
Tip 5. Snorkeling at Isla del Caño
A must-do! Isla del Caño is just off the coast of Drake Bay and is a protected nature reserve. The snorkeling and diving here are amazing – with chances to see rays, turtles, and colorful tropical fish. Book a half-day tour and don’t forget your underwater camera.
Tip 6. Hike the Drake Trail
Love hiking? The Drake Trail is for you. It starts at Playa Colorada and follows the coastline toward Playa San Josetico. Along the way: hanging bridges, jungle, beaches, and peaceful views. Note: it’s not a loop, so you’ll either have to hike back or arrange a moto-taxi or boat (check the schedules in advance!).
Restaurants in Drake Bay
Our absolute favorite was Kalaluna Bistro – we went three times! The lovely ladies there take allergies very seriously, and the food is beautifully presented.
