On an adventure by train!

Posted on February 17, 2023

Want to discover Europe in a different way? Go on an adventure by train! Did you know that after walking and cycling, travelling by train is the most sustainable way of getting around? In this blog, we list the advantages of travelling by train in Europe and show you our favourite routes!

The advantages

It’s cheaper

Even though people often think that travelling by train is more expensive than travelling by car…. With the current petrol prices, we are not so sure! Add to that the high parking costs and then do the math again!

It is faster or often as fast as by car

Both by car and by train, it takes seven to eight hours to travel to Berlin from the Netherlands! This example shows that for some destinations in Europe, it doesn’t really matter which mode of transport you take. The advantage of travelling by train is that you avoid traffic jams and can still get some work done behind your laptop.

Enjoy the beautiful view

One of the biggest advantages of train travel is the stunning views you can admire along the way. Whether you are travelling through the Alps or along the coastline of Spain, there are many breathtaking landscapes to enjoy. Make sure you have a camera handy to capture these moments.

Bring as much luggage as you like

Paying extra for luggage? Not on the train! Travelling by train allows you to take as much luggage as you want.

Stay connected!

Plane mode? Not on the train! Many European trains have good wifi. You also often have the option to charge your phone or laptop. This ensures that you can keep binge-watching your series or work an entire day from the train.

Train journeys across Europe

Convinced of the benefits and want to discover Europe by train? Below, we give three tips to make sure your trip is as comfortable as possible.

Plan ahead

It is important to plan your trip in advance, especially if you plan to travel during peak season. By booking your train journey well in advance, you can take advantage of early booking discounts and guarantee seat availability. In the Netherlands, keep an eye on the NS International website.

Choose the right pass

There are different rail passes available, depending on your travel plans and the countries you plan to visit. For example, a Eurail pass is ideal if you plan to visit several countries, while an Interrail pass is a good option if you are a resident of Europe and plan to travel within a single country.

Choose the right seat

Trains in Europe offer different types of seats, ranging from first-class to standard. Although first-class seats offer more comfort and are often less crowded, standard seats are often cheaper.
